Dental Education
Dr. Furniss earned his dental degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. During dental school, he was active in Delta Sigma Delta and participated in Missions of Mercy, providing care in rural Virginia communities.
National Health Services Corps
Dr. Furniss received the National Health Services Corps scholarship, which supported his education in exchange for practicing in underserved communities. Service in communities with limited access to care has remained an important part of his professional path.
Professional Experience
Before establishing his practice in Gilmer, Texas, Dr. Furniss spent three years serving patients in Mountain Home, Idaho– an underserved rural area. That experience helped shape his practical, patient-focused approach to care.
Undergraduate Education
Dr. Furniss holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Idaho State University, which provided a strong scientific foundation for his dental training.
Early Life
Dr. Furniss grew up in southeast Idaho on a small dairy farm, where he learned the value of steady hard work and responsibility. At Snake River High School, he was co-captain of a state championship football team and also participated in wrestling and track.
He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a missionary for two years in Tallahassee, Florida.
Family & Hobbies
Dr. Furniss is married to Mandi and they have four children: Lincoln, Baylor, Maycie, and Grady. The family moved to Gilmer in 2015 and they are in love with East Texas!
His hobbies include fishing, weightlifting, 4-wheeling, target shooting, and spending time with his family.
